Scenic Boat Tour to the Ice Sheet

Deep inside the fjords of South Greenland lies a quiet valley where the vast Greenland Ice Sheet descends toward the sea. On this scenic closed-boat tour from Qaqortoq, we travel through the fjord system toward Twin Glaciers near Narsaq; a place where visitors may have the rare opportunity to walk close to the edge of the ice in a surprisingly accessible Arctic landscape.

The journey through the fjords

The journey itself is part of the experience. Leaving the colorful harbor of Qaqortoq, our boat travels through the wide fjords that cut deep into the mountains of South Greenland. Inside the closed cabin you stay comfortable and protected while enjoying views of the dramatic Arctic scenery.

As we move deeper into the fjord system, the landscape becomes wilder; steep granite slopes rise from the water, seabirds glide along the cliffs, and waterfalls appear along the mountainsides. Occasionally small pieces of glacial ice drift quietly past the boat.

Arriving at Twin Glaciers

At the end of a narrow side fjord we reach the valley known as Twin Glaciers. Here two glacier tongues descend from the Greenland Ice Sheet on either side of a rocky ridge.

If conditions allow, we may be able to approach the shoreline and explore the valley on foot. Weather, ice conditions, and glacier activity can vary, and our captain will always prioritize safety when deciding whether landing is possible.

What makes this place special

Twin Glaciers offers a rare chance to experience the edge of the Greenland Ice Sheet from close range. If conditions are suitable for landing, visitors may be able to walk toward the ice and observe the glacier landscape up close.

The valley also tells a story. Not long ago the glaciers reached all the way to the fjord and calved icebergs directly into the sea. Today they have retreated inland, leaving behind a wide valley that clearly shows how the ice has changed over time.
