Cruise the waters around Qaqortoq on a semi-enclosed boat to look for icebergs and drifting ice. The cabin offers shelter from wind and spray during transit, and when we reach the best iceberg areas we remove the covers so everyone has open sightlines and clear views. Your local guide shares how ice shapes nature and daily life here, including its role in Inuit history and travel. The captain approaches the ice carefully and only as close as conditions allow. Wildlife is possible but never guaranteed.
Join a local guide and experienced captain for a relaxed iceberg tour around Qaqortoq. You’ll travel on a semi-enclosed boat, which provides shelter from wind and spray during the ride while still offering excellent views of the coastline, fjords, and surrounding mountains.
Icebergs can be present in the waters near Qaqortoq in many seasons. In spring, drift ice from Northeast Greenland often moves down the coast, changing the seascape from week to week. Some days the ice is scattered and distant, other days larger pieces gather closer to town. Because the ice is always moving with wind and currents, the route and viewing locations vary. Your captain will choose the safest and most comfortable route available that day, and adjust speed as needed for sea state and visibility.
Our boat is set up to balance shelter and sightseeing. During transit, covers help protect you from wind and spray. When we reach the most scenic iceberg areas, we remove the covers so everyone can see clearly without being blocked, and so guests can shift position for photos. If wind is strong, we may keep some shelter in place, but we always aim for the best possible viewing for the whole group.
As you cruise, your guide shares local context, including how ice connects to Greenland’s natural cycles and why it has been important for Inuit life, travel, and survival. If conditions are calm and the ice is stable, you might have the chance to get very close and briefly touch the ice, but this is never promised and depends entirely on safety. Wildlife sightings are also unpredictable, but you may spot seabirds, seals, or, in some periods, whales.
